I shop at Dollar Stores and I’m proud of it!

June 28, 2007 By: Priceless Savings Category: Miscellaneous Savings

When the first dollar type stores came out in my area I was extremely surprised to see how well they did. At a glance, the quality of items they sold appeared so cheap that even their insignificant dollar cost seemed questionable. But these stores never cease to have traffic going in and out of them and I became growingly curious as to why this was. After swallowing my foolish pride and deciding to go in myself, I discovered it was almost an addictive experience with all the great deals to be had! It’s all about that first item you find which you instantly know, right there on the spot, that you would have easily bought for full retail price elsewhere but you can now pick it up for nothing more than a measly buck. From that point on, the hunt is on for similar astonishing deals. Even if you were to make an impulsive shopping decision you would never be bothered with extreme regret or guilt because each item only costs a dollar. And at the end of the day you walk out feeling like you saved thousands of dollars. Today, these dollar stores are just that much better than the first dollar stores breaking in to the market, as the quality of their items have actually dramatically improved – most likely due to the wide success of these stores, these retail stores (especially the larger and franchised ones) can place overwhelmingly large bulk orders on their inventory items which decreases their unit costs basis and allows for higher quality items to be brought over and sold to us, the hungry consumers, for just a single buck. Don’t you just love it when capitalism and the power of numbers work in your favor?

Many good bargains can be found at the local dollar store, and often I find myself wondering why I ever needed to pay more than a dollar for a similar item at regular stores. It’s good to know what type of items are stocked at the dollar store so that when you find yourself in need of those items, you can pick it up quickly for a dollar instead of paying premium prices elsewhere.

This is by far a complete list, but dollar store types are great for picking up items such as:

  1. Pet toys and accessories (it is going to get chewed up and tossed away anyways so why spend $15 on it when you can get something similar for $1)..
  2. Children toys (it’s just as fun for them, but easier on your wallet – just make sure what you buy is safe for their age category to play with)..
  3. Snacks and drinks (drop by one if it is along your way instead of a convenience store which would charge you 2 to 3 times the amount for the same thing.).
  4. Camping supplies (like cheap dinnerware/glassware you wouldn’t mind throwing away after a few uses).
  5. Special occasion cards (that will most likely eventually get thrown away anyways after the recipient reads it – come on, admit it, you toss these away too after you get them eventually…).
  6. Gift wraps and gift bags.
  7. School supplies or home office stationary..
  8. Felt pads for safeguarding your floors from scratches when dragging furniture..
  9. Paint brushes and disposable paint accessories/tools..
  10. Crazy glue to fix minor mishaps..
  11. Craft items for projects and hobbies..
  12. Batteries to power your toys..
  13. This list can go on forever, but it really depends on what the stores around your area stock so the best thing is to go and just check it out and keep a mental note of what is available in case you ever need it.

Don’t be stunted by your own foolish pride and believe it is beneath you to shop at a dollar store - embrace it, and you may just find that even in today’s times, a dollar can still go a long ways…
