Criterion for Advancement
What is the criterion for advancement? The answer to this question will be different for everyone, but if you are seeking a promotion or salary advancement from your current position, you should always inquiry with your boss (best to ask the direct person who makes the yah/nay decision about your particular advancement) what the necessary criterion is to get to the next step or position you wish to be in. This way, you have an undisputable and solid benchmark to measure your worthiness for advancement.
You may find yourself requiring:
- specific training courses to attain special skills
- more education in order to meet corporate requirements
- special designations and/or certification
- more work experience in a particular field
- better soft skills to perform the job (ie. management, negotiation, conflict resolving, public speaking, etc.)
Regardless of what is necessary to advance, at least you have announced your intentions and now have a pragmatic plan to follow to achieve your goal. Management is now aware of your chosen career path and you are aware of exactly what is needed to succeed. Both sides are hopefully seeing eye-to-eye on the matter. It is amazing how many of us sit back and wait for a promotion/advancement to fall in to our laps rather than going out and proactively earning it.
Also, don’t forget to update your resume to include your new training, skills, certification and/or designation attained.
