Ask for a Raise
Sounds simple enough, but do you know how many people out there wait for a raise that they well deserve as oppose to asking for it? Think about it, do you really have anything to lose by “asking” for a raise. I’m not saying you should storm into your boss’ office and threaten to quit if you don’t get a salary increase. But, if you ask in an assertive and mature manner and provide justifications as to why you believe you deserve a raise, you may be surprised at the results. If anything at all, you have at least made a case for yourself and it will be in your boss’ mind the next time an increase is due. Plus, sad but true, it is often the squeaky wheel that gets the grease. You may get that raise much earlier than you would have if you just waited for it to land in your lap, and who knows how much money you could have given up by that time…
Caution with this one, only ask once or twice (if you indeed REALLY believe you deserve a raise), don’t become a nuisance to your boss – if they are going to give it to you then they will, otherwise for whatever reason you will have to wait still for another prime opportunity, but again at least the notion is on the table now and both sides are aware for future consideration. It is still a step in the right direction.
